The calling

Once a forklift mechanic in a bustling Bangkok warehouse, his life took an unexpected turn on a road to Tak. There, he saw a photograph of His Majesty King Rama IX pointing toward an unfamiliar forest. The image lingered, returning to him in his dreams. Leaving the city behind, he set out to find that very forest. His journey led him to Ban Le Tor Gold a P’ka-gae-yo (Karen) village hidden deep within Tha Song Yang, where the mountains had once been stripped bare.

จากช่างซ่อมรถโฟล์คลิฟต์ในโกดังเมืองหลวง จุดเปลี่ยนชีวิตเกิดขึ้นบนเส้นทางมุ่งหน้าสู่จังหวัดตาก เมื่อเขาได้เห็นภาพถ่ายของในหลวงรัชกาลที่ ๙ ทรงชี้พระหัตถ์ไปยังผืนป่าแห่งหนึ่ง ภาพนั้นฝังลึกและวนเวียนกลับมาในความฝันซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่า เขาตัดสินใจทิ้งชีวิตในเมืองเพื่อออกตามหาป่าแห่งนั้น จนได้พบกับ “บ้านเลอตอโกล” ชุมชนชาวปกาเกอะญอที่ซ่อนตัวอยู่ลึกเข้าไปในอำเภอท่าสองยาง ดินแดนที่ครั้งหนึ่งภูเขาทั้งลูกเคยถูกถางจนกลายเป็นเขาหัวโล้น

Protecting the Headwaters

There, the Catimor and Typica seedlings that the King had bestowed upon the community years prior were still alive, waiting beneath the canopy of a recovering forest. Today, Le Tor Gold has placed in the Thai Specialty Coffee Awards for three consecutive years. Yet, for Pao, the true prize is conservation. His core mission is to protect the headwater forests with every ounce of his strength. He actively encourages local villagers, many of whom rely on shifting cultivation near vital water sources, to cultivate shade-grown coffee instead. This transition not only secures a sustainable livelihood but also restores the soil and brings the streams back to life.

การปกป้องผืนป่าต้นน้ำ

ที่นั่น ต้นกล้ากาแฟพันธุ์คาติมอร์และทิปปิก้าที่ในหลวงรัชกาลที่ ๙ พระราชทานไว้เมื่อหลายปีก่อนยังคงมีชีวิต รอคอยเวลาเติบโตอยู่ใต้ร่มเงาของต้นไม้ที่เริ่มฟื้นคืน วันนี้ กาแฟจากไร่เลอตอโกลด์คว้ารางวัลเวทีสุดยอดเมล็ดกาแฟไทยถึง 3 ปีซ้อน ทว่ารางวัลที่แท้จริงสำหรับเขาคือ “การอนุรักษ์” ภารกิจหลักของช่างเปาคือการทุ่มเทกำลังรักษาป่าต้นน้ำ เขาลงพื้นที่ชักชวนชาวบ้านที่เคยทำไร่หมุนเวียนเลื่อนลอยบริเวณต้นน้ำ ให้หันมาปลูกกาแฟใต้ร่มไม้ การปรับเปลี่ยนนี้ไม่เพียงแต่สร้างรายได้ที่ยั่งยืน แต่ยังช่วยฟื้นฟูผืนป่าและรักษาระบบนิเวศทางน้ำให้กลับมาอุดมสมบูรณ์

As the project in Tha Song Yang reached its spatial limits, Pao expanded his efforts into the neighboring Omkoi District. Today, the initiative actively safeguards The Mae Tuen watershed, a crucial tributary flowing into the Bhumibol Dam, growing from a single community into a unified network of eight villages. Pao does not measure his success in trophies. He counts the returning trees and the clean water flowing freely from the restored forests.

เมื่อพื้นที่ฝั่งท่าสองยางไม่สามารถขยายต่อได้ ช่างเปาจึงนำโมเดลนี้ขยายสู่เขตรอยต่ออำเภออมก๋อย เพื่อดูแล “ป่าต้นน้ำแม่ตื่น” สายน้ำสำคัญที่ไหลลงสู่เขื่อนภูมิพล จากจุดเริ่มต้นเพียงหมู่บ้านเดียว ปัจจุบันเครือข่ายความร่วมมือนี้ได้หยั่งรากลึกและขยายครอบคลุมถึง 8 หมู่บ้าน ช่างเปาไม่ได้วัดความสำเร็จจากถ้วยรางวัล… เขาวัดมันด้วยจำนวนต้นไม้ที่เพิ่มขึ้น และสายน้ำที่ได้รับการปกป้อง
